ABSTRACT
Ngulube, M., 1986. Preliminary study on germination of pretreated seed of teak (Tectona gran-
" d/s) under nursery conditions in Zomba, Malawi. For. Ecol. Manage., 17: 147-151.
Seeds of teak ( Tectona grandis Linn. F.) were pretreated using ten different treatments before
sowing in the nursery. Germinated seeds were counted weekly until 20 weeks after sowing to assess
the effect of pretreament on germination.
Germination percentages were generally low, ranging from 0% to 32.5% by 20 weeks after sowing.
The 96-h stream-soaked pretreated seed demonstrated superiority, followed by seed pretreated
by container soaking for 96 h and alternate drying and wetting for I week. Scorching led
to no germination at all, whereas stream soaking for 72, 48 and 24 h achieved only about 3%
germination each.
It is therefore recommended to soak the seed of teak in running water for 96 h before sowing in
the nursery to effectively improve germination.
