4.2. Rates of cobble transport
The spatial movement of cobbles across the eight sample days is mapped in Figs. 7 and 8 whereas Fig. 9 presents a summary of data from all sites as box and whisker plots. At site 1 all cobbles moved northwest following release. By day 4, 28 of 60 relocated cobbles had moved some 30–315 m along the beach. However, by day 32 there had been little additional transport, with 24 relocated cobbles having only moved 25–315 m. By day 64 the median cobble distance increased nearly three-fold from 110 to 300 m. Only 5 cobbles were relocated on day 135, which had travelled 290–900 m, but by the end of the experiment (day 207), 20 cobbles were relocated. These cobbles showed considerable variability, with one cobble travelling only 130 m from the release point compared with the most distant cobble
traced 2500 m from release. The median travel distance was 470 m. At sites 2 and 3 net cobble transport was uni-directional, consistent with site 1, with all cobbles travelling alongshore toward the north/northwest (Fig. 8). On day 4 only 4 cobbles were relocated at site 2 and 10 at site 3. Alongshore movement in each case was similar, 40–140 m at site 2, and 20–125 m at site 3. At site 1 little additional transport was recorded between day 4 and day 32, but at sites 2 and 3 the median transport distance increased from 25 to 90 m, and 35 to 95 m. It is interesting to note that despite considerable variability at each site, the median transportdistance recorded at site 1 (110 m) was similar to the other sites. By day 64, little additional cobble transport was recorded at site 2 or 3, which contrasts with site 1 where the median transport distance increased three-fold. On day 135 only 1 cobble was relocated at site 3 and no cobbles were relocated at site 2. On day 207 no cobbles were relocated at site 3, but 19 were relocated at site 2. The median northward transport for these cobbles was 500 m, which is similar to site 1 (470 m). However, the range of values (375–700 m) was much smaller than at site 1, with the most distant cobble at site 1 recovered 5 times further alongshore than at site 2. The median alongshore travel distance of cobbles recovered at site 1 and site 2 after 207 days
implies a long term net transport rate on the order of 2–2.5 mper day. Fig. 10 shows progressive vector plots for the median cobble at each site. At site 1 cobbles moved northwest, following the trend of the coast, but at site three the coastal orientation is closer to grid north, which is reflected in the transport direction. In the days immediately following release quite consistent patterns were recorded. Following release on 16 September cobbles were immediately
set in motion (day 2) by a storm on 17–18 September that resulted in substantial (~100 m) longshore movement recorded on day 4 at sites 1 and 2. Notably at the northernmost site about half the amount of transport occurred, and the transport direction had a greater across- than along-shore component. Between days 4 and 8 a general trend of northward alongshore movement was apparent at all sites (30 m at site 1, 15 m at site 2, 12 m at site 3). Between days 16 and 32 a reversal in the direction of alongshore transport occurred at sites 1 and 2 (17 and 35 m respectively), whereas considerable (~90 m) northward alongshore movement occurred at site 3. Between days 32 and 64 considerable alongshore transport occurred at sites 1 and 3, but not at site 2. Site 1 had little transport (of the median cobble) between days 64 and 207, but considerable transport did occur at site 2. Ultimately the total median transport distance at sites 1 and 2 at day 207 is similar.
4.3. Rate of abrasion
On sample days 64 and 207 an effort was made to recover individual cobbles for reweighing. This was time-consuming as cobbles had to be excavated from beneath the surface, sometimes at several tens of centimetres depth, and individual cobbles passed by the antennae to identify tagged cobbles. Once identified, cobbles were surface dried and weighed using a set of field scales accurate to 0.1 g. Seventeen cobbles were relocated and reweighed on day 64 or 207.
Most cobbles were recovered from Site 1. While the sample size is small, the results are important because most studies of abrasion are laboratory based and there are very few direct measurements of cobble abrasion on gravel beaches in the field. The results show consistent patterns (Fig. 11). All cobbles showed weight loss, implying that abrasion had been active during the transport of the cobbles. The total weight loss varied from ~1.0 to ~14.0 g (drying experiments in the laboratory confirmed that weighing error associated with water absorption is b1 g). Second, there was progressive weight loss with timescale of sampling. For example, cobbles reweighed on day 207 had lost more weight than cobbles reweighed on day 64. Third, at site 1 there is a positive correlation (R2=0.66) between net travel distance from source, and total weight loss. Few cobbles were recovered for weighing from site 2 or 3, but it is worth noting that the cobbles from these sites lost more weight on average than cobbles from site 1.
