12. Problems and their solution
The major problem encountered in the development of this ecotourism operation came about when the village had to undertake an electrification project. Until 1999, there was no electrical power within the community and the people were anxious to have their community enjoy electricity. With the electrification project, high-tension electric poles had to be erected, with electrical cables running though the forest. it became obvious that this activity would impact negative on the survival of the monkeys. The community realizing this threat to the monkeys compelled the government to increase the budget allocated for the project and to opt for the laying of underground cables. There were several protests from the community and the government eventually laid underground cables to bring electricity to the village. This was a significant milestone in the history and development of the sanctuary.
