The candle festival in Ubon Ratchathani includes a light and sound show, a bazaar of community products, a food fair, a candle procession, and various categories of candle carving. The candle procession, in particular comprises ornately carved traditional beeswax candles of various shapes and sizes. Larger and higher candles can be carved into the figures of mythological creatures, such as garuda, a half bird, half man, and the naga, the guardian serpent.
The festival in this province is special, as it also includes international wax carving, joined by sculptors from many countries. They come to display the artistic creations in an exhibition of wax sculptures at the International Wax Candle Festival, which is taking place from 15 to 31 July at Thung Si Mueang Park in Mueang district.
Ubon Ratchathani is noted for quality beeswax, and candle crafting is a delicate art, making a name for this province.
