Karl Lagerfeld may have been at Fendi for some 50-plus years now, but he doesn’t look it – or feel it – if this afternoon’s spirited show has anything to do with it. Fendi has long been in a playful mood – bag bugs, and those larger than life-size furry Fendirumi monsters: a pink Piro-chan and a blue Bug-kun that pop up at store openings the world over – and this season continued along that path. Models had hair bunched into half-up pigtails and wore thick gooey glitter gloss on their lips. Silhouettes were equally dress-up; cinch-waisted skirts flared out like paper doll cutouts, in fact, they seemingly were cutout, two pieces of fabric front and back charmingly fastened at the sides with ribbons, while others were apron style, tied at the back. Baby doll lingerie slips also had girlish appeal, so too the scalloped edging that finished peplum jackets with giant patch pockets and billowing-sleeved shirts. It felt delightfully coquettish in parts; and anyway, women will have to be young to get away with one of those snug and striped cropped sweaters (evidently, designers everywhere are intent on revealing midriffs come spring). Tiny pastel-coloured bags were accessorized with heavy-duty guitar straps, and the new bag bug? A furry dolly dangling from a keychain, with string legs and stompy boots. We’ll all want one.
