Hourly metering should be considered an obvious part of the smart grid system. Most of the
projects have hourly metering as a prerequisite. If real-time or time of use pricing models are
to be used hourly readings is a must. For Sweden it seems that a lack of smart meters that
allow remote hourly readings is not an issue since about 90% of the installed meters allow
remote hourly readings. Furthermore, since the regulation has been changed to allow hourly
reading of the meters the regulation hindrance is also not a concern. The issue however, seems
to be to get customers aware and interested of the possibility of hourly reading and to present
favourable contracts and business models.
