What is coaching?
It is important not to confuse coacging with clinical supervision or memtorship.
In clinical supervision, the supervisee reflects on practice issues, usually with a senior or more experienced supervisor, and the process is generally located around specific aspects of care and clinical critical incidents.
This relationship can sometime fall in the potentially uncomfortable "middle ground" between management accountability and professional responsibility, and is very dependent upon the participating individuals and model of supervision for its degree of success or failure.
Mentorship is also a one-to-one relationship based on trust, where his/her wing and actively supports and promotes the person's best interest.
Advice and assistance on career issues is offered, usually over an extended period of time, and the mentor frequently acts as a role model or exemplar to the protege.
Traditionally, mentors are senior people within the same organisation.
