Every emotion usually has a cause even though this cause may not be immediately perceived. Sometimes, the emotion is out of proportion to the perceived cause. For example, a slight unintentional remark may cause someone deep hurt and make the person cry. This is a sign that the emotion triggered by the immediate stimulus is rooted deeply and probably belongs to a complex pattern of experiences not dealt with in the past. The process of self-understanding thus implies not only knowing the cause of immediate feelings, but also understanding their roots as buried in the past.
