A challenging practical procedure was described for the determination
of total fluorine content of wine by using a high resolution
continuum source atomic absorption spectrometer and evaluating
the molecular absorbances of CaF at two wavelengths simultaneously.
The most remarkable advantage of the method is that total
fluorine rather than free fluoride can be determined in every media
without needing extra sample preparation. Linear calibration
technique could be safely applied for all quantifications and the
results concurred with those found by analyte (standard) addition
technique. The advantage of using CaF is that the method is practical
compared to others, a modifier is not used, LOD is appropriate
and there is no need to coat the furnace with permanent modifiers
such as Zr, Ir, W. Also, in order to increase the sensitivities and
reduce the LOD and characteristic mass, summation of the absorbances
for CaF at 606.440 nm and 606.231 nm were evaluated.
Since there is no toxicity limit for F concentration in wines, and the
LOD of the study (0.18 ng) is below the recommended concentration
(1 mg l1
), this method is sufficient to detect toxicity as well as
it is easy and novel.
