A commonly accepted principle of motivation is that one cannot motivate other people. It is possible to create environments in which people can motivate themselves. Common factors of intrinsically motivating environments that are frequently discussed in the literature are as follows:
• Giving positive reinforcement • Conveying enthusiasm • Creating awareness of value • Cultivating personal responsibility for learning • Fostering supportive interpersonal relationships in class • Linking individuals’ intrinsic self‐interest with the class • Structuring experiences that show real‐world relevance
