India’s Sixth Five-Year Plan (1980-85)!
The draft of the sixth five-year was presented in 1978. However, the plan was terminated with the change of government in January. 1980. The new sixth five year plan was affected in April 1980.
The plan stated, “The basic task of economic planning in India is to bring about a structural transformation of the economy so as to achieve a high and sustained rate of growth, a progressive improvement in the standard of living of the masses leading to the eradication of poverty and unemployment and provide the material base for a self-reliant socialist economy”.
Objectives:
(i) To eliminate unemployment and underemployment.
(ii) To raise the standard of living of the poorest of masses.
(iii) To reduce disparities in income and wealth.
(iv) To provide basic needs of life such as drinking water, health care, roads in rural areas and minimum services for those living in urban area.
(v) To achieve self-reliance.
