Wu found that
even adults who studied English, without grade pressure, did not dare
speak English in front of other people due to the fear of making errors.
Additionally, fear of making errors and losing face was among seven factors that influenced university students’ willingness in participating in
classroom oral communication. Many Thai students take things easily
not seriously while learning English. They want to be entertained while
learning. Anything that requires hardship that they consider uninteresting
and boring and it distracts them from study. Hardship is an important
element to be successful. Thai students, at all levels, required to
take English as compulsory subjects, their English proficiency is still
unsatisfactory (Ounpigul, 1981 ; Phukandar, 1997 ; Charumanee,
2002).
