I am writing this blog in contrast to all of the horror stories you read on the internet published by those in the media! The people who write all these blogs, news articles and whatever other kind of propaganda they can publish is mostly garbage information.
You need to ask yourself, does the person writing this stuff actually work in the automotive industry or do they get paid to write stories and articles?
With that said, I am a car salesman who really does work in the business. I will not defend the car business in any way shape or form and would encourage consumers to conduct their research and due diligence. I will say that just like any other profession you can find good and bad in everything!
The most important thing I can tell consumers in the market for a car is that the easiest way to buy a new car is the opposite of what you will read online by these article writers who have absolutely nothing to do with the car business and have no more experience or knowledge of how to get a great deal any more than you do!
In fact I would say that any article that claims to educate you on how to fight the salesperson is way off and I wouldn’t take that advice if I were you! Let’s think about this for a second! When you read an article that tells you how to give the salesperson a hard time then expect that salesperson to give you a low price or a great deal? Would you be more inclined to give someone a great deal after they give you a hard time? Absolutely not! You will pay more for giving me a hard time or I won’t sell you a car, period! I could care less if this type of person buys a car from me or not, in fact if they do decide to buy it will cost them for the aggravation they have caused me!
So how does one work a salesman for a great deal you ask, no problem! There are several things to keep in mind when dealing with a car salesman.
#1- If the salesman is rude or simply a jerk, leave! Go to another dealership that offers the brand you are interested in until you find the right salesman who is interested in what you want in your new car!
#2- Once you find that sales person, don’t be afraid to go sit down with them at their desk and provide them with all the information they need about you and your new car, how you will use the car everyday and what type of features you would like in your new vehicle! Doing this will help both you and the sales person navigate through the AVAILABLE inventory in dealer stock!
#3- Don’t tell the sales person that you are not ready to buy today. If I had a nickel for every person who walked through the dealership door with an excuse not to buy today I would never need to work again! The guru’s who write these articles never bother to clue consumers in that the car business is a today business! So when you tell the sales person you are not ready to buy today, you are just telling them not to give you any deal because you are not ready!
#4- A professional sales person in the auto industry is still a person just like you who goes shopping for things and wants a good deal on whatever they buy too! We understand that you want the best deal if you are dealing with a real professional!
#5- Be ready to test drive! If you don’t like a car when you test drive it, the price is irrelevant! Tell the sales person: ” I did not really like the vehicle, can we look at something else?” I love when customers say this to me, this means that they are serious about buying a car and when they find the right car they will let me know!
In the end, most of the fuss and horror stories you read about online make up about 2% of the buying population who have had some bad experience with a dealership or sales person. In my experience (17 years worth) I have seen it all and the reason why I am writing this article is because too many times I have read these articles telling consumers how to buy a car and it is usually all wrong information that will do nothing but cause both you and the dealer grief!
In most cases the customers who read these articles and then visit the local dealership are the ones that have the hardest time and end up paying the most money for their new car.
Again, I will not defend the car business, it is tough on both the consumer and the sales person alike! You will find some not so professional people in this business that will “rip you off” if you are not careful. With that said all you need to do is a little research!
For the most part, for us in the business that are professionals, all we want to do is help you find the right car for the right price so that we can make a sale to a happy customer! It really is just that simple folks! I never sit across the desk from my customer and worry about how much profit the dealership is making, NEVER!
You are my pay check if I sell you a car. I am not on the dealership’s side, I just represent the vehicles that the dealership has to offer you! That is my job, to first find you the right car, then get the right figures so that you will buy the car!
It’s no secret folks, car salesman come to work to sell cars. That’s our job and yes we have a boss ! The back and forth stuff that everyone says they hate is not going to ever go away and you can not buy a car online, you have to buy it from someone and if it is a new car, then you have to visit a dealership and yes they will make some profit! The dealership is entitled to make profit like any other business and you are entitled to not get ripped off!
I will continue to write more articles and I will be happy to interact with you should you have any questions about buying your next car! With that said, please do not reply with your horror stories about how you got ripped off by a car dealership in the past.
I am willing to help give you sound advice that will really help you buy a car in the future. Ask questions!
