Smilanick et al. (1999) found that pH value of solutions did not
predict their efficacy to control green mold; the pH of sodium bicarbonate
solutions rises rapidly at high temperature, yet heating of
the solutions sometimes improved effectiveness. In the present
study, pH was not controlled or assessed but the heated sodium
biocarbonate solutions were superior in controlling the disease. In
areas where water discharged from sodium bicarbonate treatment
tanks exceeds pH or sodium content tolerances, other salts may
be suitable candidates. Calcium chloride was inferior to sodium
biocarbonate in its effect on mango anthracnose.
