It requires that the function be differentiable, and the derivative as well as the function must be evaluated at every step. Nevertheless, it is the method of choice for functions whose derivatives can be efficiently evaluated and which are continuous in the region of the root. Furthermore, it is about the only choice for systems of nonlinear equations.
