Horses included in this study were 13 newborn Shetland
foals. Duration of pregnancy was 327 3 days. All
mares foaled spontaneously and without veterinary intervention,
and foals were viable at birth. Birth weight was
20.1 3.9 kg with no significant difference between
groups. Clinical and hematological data from these foals
have in part been published elsewhere [20].
The study was approved by the competent authority for
animal experimentation in Austria (Federal Ministry for
Science and Research, license number, 68.205/0130-11/
10 b/2009).
