Two hundred forty-four pupils had their
height, weight, and age recorded at the same time as they
produced a urine and stool sample; a blood sample was
obtained by venepuncture in 236 pupils but in eight
pupils this was not obtained. The heights and weights
were compared with the predicted normal for age (11).
Urine samples were examined with the semiquantitative
filtration technique (12) and the schistosomal egg count recorded. Feces were examined in thick smears stained with iodine and the parasites were directly identified and
counted. The serum was separated and stored.
