The intent of the United Way remains consistent – to raise money simultaneously for several worthwhile causes, thus cutting down on duplication of fund-raising drives and saving time and frustration for donors. Individual charities within local United Ways receive on the average one-fourth of their funding from the annual United Way campaigns. The remainder of funding comes from grants and bequests, from government agencies in fees for contracted services, and from supplemental fund-raising drives. These supplemental drives are approved or condoned by the United Way.
