There are two living species of the hulking, sharp-horned wild cattle called bison, ih America and Eastern Europe. Formerly, other species roamed most northern lands, being hunted by prehistoric people and featuring in their cave art and rituals. Various types of bison have inhabited North America and Europe since Pliocene times. The horns are true horns - that is, they grow continually with a bony core covered by an outer horny material, unlike the antlers of
deer, which are shed yearly.
