Therefore, many students take course for study abroad experiences with the prospect that they too will “pick up” if not become “fluent” in the target languages they have chosen to study, returning home with greatly improved language skills.
Unfortunately, these popular awareness aside, relatively little erudite concentration has been dedicate to documenting changes in the communicative language skills of students who have studied abroad. The relationship between language learning and the study abroad experience suggests that there are in fact differences between the language skill of those who have had the opportunity to stay abroad and those whose language learning has been limited to the formal language classroom at home.
