Evidence supporting the endosymbiotic theory
1. Mitochondria and chloroplasts are approximately the same size as
prokaryotic cells
2. Mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own DNA, present in the form of
a single circular loop.
3. Organelles have their own 70S ribosome.
4. Organelle DNA and ribosomes carry out protein synthesis.
5. Mitochondria and chloroplast divide independently of the eukaryotic cell
cycle by means of binary fission
6. The double-membrane structures of mitochondria and chloroplasts
strongly resemble the cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria.
7. Chloroplasts strongly resemble the structure of photosynthetic chlorophyll-
containing prokaryotic cyanobacteria.
