The story……… Theatre is said to have been the inspiration of Brahma, the god of creation, and Bharata figures clearly in its origin. Indra, king of gods approached Brahma and asked that he create a form of diversion that could be seen as well as heard and that would be accessible to the four occupational groups (varna) – priests, warrior, tradesmen and peasants. Therefore, Brahma created drama (natya), which he referred to as a fifth sacred text. Brahma requested that Indra compose plays and have the gods enact them. Indra asked that the priest be recruited to take on his task. Bharata and his sons were summoned by Brahma and persuaded to serve as the first actors. The occasion of the first performance was established to depict and coincide with the defeat of the demons by the god, celebrating Indra’s victorious leaderships.
