Health professionals talk of the importance of fibre in the diet. The Australian Dietary Guidelines outline a link between high dietary fibre intakes and lower rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes cardiovascular disease. For some people however the source of the fibre, as much as the fibre itself, is of the utmost importance.
People with gluten intolerance or those that have been diagnosed with Coeliac disease need to include foods that are both gluten-free and contain the fibre they need to maintain good health and nutrition. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease in which gluten in some grains triggers inflammation and damage to the small bowel. The disease affects one per cent of Australians.
Coeliac Awareness Week focuses attention on this important issue and is a good time to consider gluten-free sources of fibre that can be easily included in the diet.
