MAE was also used to extract lipids out of microalgal strains. In one study that used microwave to disrupt the cell wall structure followed by extraction using chloroform/methanol (1:1 v/v), lipid extraction efficiency (% of total lipid) of 44.2%, 66.7%, and 88.8% was reported for Scenedesmus sp., Chlorella vulgaris, and Botryococcus sp., respectively [37]. Microwave was demonstrated to be the best approach to disintegrate cell wall structures among bead-beating, sonication, and autoclave for all three tested algal strains.
