The terms performance-based pay and incentive pay are generally not used to refer to rewards that consist mostly of social recognition. In practice, however, no clear line separates such rewards from those that are primarily. Regardless of the specific from of the reward, for it to be effective, it must be valued by employees. Because the value of a reward is only partly a function of its monetary worth, judging "how much is enough" is mostly a matter of speculation or trial and error.
