Shah Jahan was chosen to take the throne after his father died. He ruled from 1628 – 1658. Jahan enjoyed some good years and was known as one of the best rulers, but his life ended in tragedy. When he was 68 years old, his third son, Aurangzeb, declared that Jahan was incompetent to rule and confined him to the Citadel of Agra in what amounted to a struggle for power.
