Few studies have directly compared the smoking behavior of medical students with that of other college students in China. Studies have tended to survey medical students alone or have failed to differentiate medical students from other college students (Zhou et al., 1997; Xiang et al., 1999;Yang et al., 1999). Since the survey methods of published reports vary as well, it is difficult to compare data across studies. A comprehensive national smoking prevalence survey shows that medical professionals are less likely to be daily smokers than are most other professionals (Yang et al., 1999). However, that survey does not differentiate between medical students and other college students.
