Thai teenager Ratchanok Intanon captured the world women's badminton singles title yesterday, upsetting local hopeful Li Xuerui 22-20, 18-21, 21-14 in Guangzhou, China.
In her second attempt at the tournament, fourth seed Ratchanok needed just 65 minutes to defeat top seed and world number one Li, who was also trying to take her first world title.
The victory made Ratchanok both the youngest-ever world badminton champion at the age of 18, and the first Thai to win a world title in the sport.
