The Bermuda Triangle is an area between Florida's Fort Lauderdale, Bermuda and Puerto Rico, and covers about 1,140,000 square km. It is supposed to be the site of mysterious disappearances of ships and aircraft.
Despite the fact that there are no more disappearances here than anywhere else with similar weather conditions, numerous theories have been put forward, ranging from aliens to paranormal activity, as well as more plausible ideas such as sudden bad weather or pilot error.
A more recent theory is that large amounts of methane compounds caused by the decay of plants are stored in the sea floor of the American continental shelf and that if they are jolted by an earthquake they bubble up to the surface. If sufficient were released, they would make it impossible for the water to support the weight of a ship or for an aeroplane to stay in the sky.
