Borman and Motowidlo (1993) developed a model of job performance, which posits that the behaviours that comprise
the job performance domain can be classified as either task or contextual performance. Task performance is defined as
behaviours that contribute directly to the organization’s technical core and includes those activities that are typically
recognized as part of a workers job (Coleman & Borman 2000). Contextual performance refers to those behaviours that maintain the broader social environment in which the technical core must function. It includes more discretionary
behaviours that assist the hospital to function (Borman & Motowidlo 1993).
