Which vessels are subject to mandatory registration in the NIS / NOR?
Every Norwegian ship of a maximum length of 15 meters or more shall be entered in the Register of Ships or in the Norwegian International Ship Register if the conditions for registration there have been met ref. the Norwegian Maritime Code S. 11.
Which vessels can voluntarily be registered in the NOR?
A Norwegian vessel with a maximum length of less than 15 metres can, at the owner’s request, be entered in the Ship register if:
Its length overall is at least 7 meters or
If the ship is required to be registered under Act No. 15 of 26 March 1999 relating to the right to participate in fishing and hunting (Participation Act) or
If it is to be used exclusively or mainly in trade.

Voluntary registrations in the Shipbuilding Register
Ships under construction in Norway, and contracts for the construction of ships in Norway can upon application be entered in a separate chapter of the Register of Ships (The Register of Ships under Construction) ref. the Norwegian Maritime Code S. 31.
