In a
second trial 20 fattening pigs (control n=10, experimental
group n=10) were fed ad libitum without lac or including
lac in the diet (26.9 g lac/kg DM). After adaptation to both
diets all 20 pigs were infected orally (single dose infection
on one day) with Salmonella Derby (2.6×108 cfu/pig) and
the fecal shedding of Salmonella was tested. On day 14,
21, 28, 35 and 42 after oral infection the fattening pigs
were sacrificed (on each day two pigs per group) and
different substrates (tonsils, ileal and hindgut contents,
lymphnodes) were tested for Salmonella using cultural
techniques.
