Anytime data is unencrypted, even for a brief second, there is exposure and risk of breach. From a backup perspective and specifically a Cloud backup perspective, in order to optimally transfer data from the customer primary site to the Cloud provider data center, technologies like deduplication are employed to reduce the data payload prior to replication. Once the data is encrypted it should never be decrypted in order to run a deduplication algorithm. This must be on your checklist when selecting a solution.
