Taking time to research other universities and learning about the leadership opportunities
that they offered through courses, programs, and/or degrees provided two important
insights. First, it was evident that careful thought was put into how these
opportunities would logically fit in with or build on unique assets of these universities.
I was confident that this type of class would fit nicely with our ongoing initiatives. At
my university, there is a 30-hr service learning graduation requirement. As one might
imagine, some students may enter into a scenario of mandated volunteerism with a bit
of skepticism, creating an imperative for the students to clearly see the value of their
service project early in the process to maximize the beneficial outcomes that flow
from their service learning experiences
