Kounellis not only expresses his interest in history and the past, but tries to collect the information about a particular place himself by going to it. He tries to engage in some way with the part in question, observes the different place and after developing a special relationship with him, tries to interpret diversity and incorporate it into his work. Participatory observation is therefore exploited and, like ethnologists with focal points mainly outside Europe, Kounellis tries to record an overall picture or only certain areas of a culture by moving it to these places. A typical example is his visit to the Negev Desert in southern Israel in order to create an in situ project at the Negev Museum of Art in be'er Sheva. With this work the creator aimed to express his connection with the place and people, so that visitors could recognize the work as part of their life and context.
