There is some debate about whether such nutritional guidelines are justified. For example, a recent article in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine raise the fundamental question of whether public health guidelines are appropriate altogether, controversially arguing “the notion that the government should tell people what and how much to eat is inherently paternalistic”. It is argued that such guidelines are unwillingly forced upon a public that did not ask for them in the first place.
