Folks have spent a lot of time harping on the lessons that the business world can learn from the military. On this Veterans Day, I would like to flip the pistol and ask: What leadership lessons can the military learn from business, and in particular, startups?
After graduating from Harvard Business School with an MBA in 2010, I commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. I had dreamed about becoming a Marine since high school, but between starting a business, teaching high school students, management consulting, and ultimately returning to grad school, I somehow always found an excuse not to pull the proverbial trigger. With graduation looming, I decided to defer a job offer from Goldman Sachs and follow one of my unfulfilled dreams.
