The sterols of microalgae can be divided into two groups: cho-
lesterol and phytosterols. A low level of cholesterol was detected in
Nannochloropsis
(2.6 mg/g DM) and
Isochrysis
(1.1 mg/g DM). All
four microalgae contained phytosterols varying between 1.1 and
13.5 mg/g of DM biomass (
