Following last week’s leak, BMW has officially unveiled the four-door 4 Series Gran Coupe.
Like the relationship between the 5 Series sedan and 6 Series Gran Coupe, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door version of the 4 Series coupe. Yes, that is exactly what the 3 Series sedan is, but the 4 Series Gran Coupe is also lower, wider and sleeker than the 3 Series.
While the Gran Coupe sports the exact dimensions as the two-door 4 Series, it has 12 additional millimetres of headroom and its rear cargo area extends by some 112 millimetres. The rear opening is also configured as a hatchback, similar to the Audi A7 and European-spec Audi A5 Sportback.
In North America, the 4 Series Gran Coupe will share powertrains with the two-door 4 Series and the 3 Series sedan. Both the 240-horsepower turbo-four and the 300-horsepower, 3.0-litre inline-six will be available, while the sole transmission option will be an eight-speed automatic. In addition to the gasoline engines and the automatic transmission, expect BMW’s full crop of diesel engines and a six-speed manual in European models.
Canadian pricing hasn’t been announced just yet, but the 428i Gran Coupe will start at $41,225 in the U.S. The all-wheel-drive 428i xDrive will carry a $43,225 price tag, while the range-topping 435i will start at $46,725. The 4 Series Gran Coupe will make its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, followed by a North American debut in April at the New York International Auto Show.
