The OAS became involved in the Dominican situation earlier than the United Nations, engaged in a wider range of activities, and provided the main channels by which a political settlement was finally achieved. In addition to the authorization of the Inter-American Peace Force mentioned above, the foreign ministers of the OAS, two days before the first Security Council debates, established and sent to Santo Domingo a commission composed of representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, and Panama. This commission was charged with responsibilities for facilitating the restoration of peace, see king a cease-fire, and evacuating endangered persons.
