Introduction to Mycology
I. General characterizations
1. Fungi are eukaryotic organisms whose cells posses a membraneenclosed nucleus and various organelles (nuclei, mitochondria, golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes etc).
2.fungal membranes contain ergosterol rather than cholesterol in other eukaryotic membranes.
3. The cell wall surrounding fungal cells, which differs in composition from bacterial cell walls, contains chitin, glucans, and protein.
4. Heterotrophic organism; fungi lack chlorophyll
5. Like plants, fungi have rigid cell wall and are therefore non-motile.
