An unlikely localeLocated in the heart of Argentine Patagonia, El Calafate is the gateway to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, our planet’s fourth-largest glacial body. Despite its arid climate, this small, tourist-driven town lies only 50km from the ice edge (seen here beneath the distant line of clouds). The aqua-coloured water of Lake Argentino belies the town’s proximity to large glaciers. It is a sign that large quantities of lightly-coloured, pulverised rock, a byproduct of glacial movement, are mixed into the otherwise dark blue water
