Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (Kang, Heung-Sik, Director), located in Bundang (300 Gumi-dong), Seongnam City, Kyeonggi-do, began its first treatment on the 10th of May 2003. It was established as a result of the rapid increase in demand for geriatric treatment and the government's request for the establishment of a medical facility for local residents. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital consists of six centers: Geriatrics Medical Center, Heart Center, Cranial Nerve Center, Lung Center, Articulation Center, and the Health Improvement Center. The hospital also encompasses 23 departments including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Chest Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics. This hospital branch is connected with the highest levels of Korean medical technology at Seoul National University Hospital, realizes the function of a national medical center for adult and elderly diseases, utilizes a digital medical treatment system, operates special centers according to diseases, and serves as a general treatment and emergency center for the residents in Bundang. Korea is experiencing a rapid increase in the number of its elderly citizens (over 65 years old), and that portion of the population now represents 10.7% of the entire nation. However, despite the rapidly increasing demand for medical treatment for the elderly, the actual situation shows a severe lack of medical treatment facilities, both public and private. This difficulty is increased due to the low profitability of treating elderly diseases, thereby resulting in the avoidance of this field by private hospitals. Faced with these circumstances, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital will open a new chapter in internal medical treatment through its performance as a national medical center for the elderly, through training and promoting a succession of capable staff and residents, and through a systematic study of elderly-related diseases. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital is built in an innovative hospital environment in which an EMR system has replaced the non-digital paper-chart facilities. The patient's treatment data is computerized creating Korea’s first advanced technology, digital hospital for the 21st century. Doctors can review a patient's medical records whenever and wherever they are simply by using a notebook or a PDA. In addition, the layout design, which focuses on the patients’ convenience and attention to atmosphere, harmonizes with nearby Bulgok Mountain and Tanchon Stream, and is a pride of the hospital. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital maintains an intimate relationship with Seoul National University Hospital, so as to offer the highest level medical treatment service possible. The hospital will also try to take on a more central role as Korea's first specialized hospital for the elderly and the treatment of adult diseases.
