Abstract
This analysis of post war education in Japan, deals particularly with the impact of equal opportunity in education on children and society. It studies the political, historical and social background to educational organization. It describes socio-cultural patterns, the role of government, and union members and the family structure. A detailed examination of everyday life at primary schools and secondary schools is based on a year of field observation in Kyoto. Explanations are offered for the higher average cognitive achievement and the surprising degree of equality in this achievement. The impact of the new youth on adult education is given consideration.
