A lagoon is a shallow, usually artificial, pond used for temporary
or permanent storage of liquids. A stabilization lagoon is a
shallow pond for the storage of wastewater before discharge to a
stream or to a treatment facility. A sump is a stationary device
designed to contain an accumulation of hazardous waste resulting
from a hazardous discharge from a tank, container, waste pile,
surface impoundment, landfill, or other hazardous waste management
structure.
