Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide, is being widely
used as a pharmaceutical excipients (Singla
Struszczyk, 2002). It is obtained by the partial
deacetylation of chitin, natural polymer composed
of randomly distributed β-(1-4)-linked Dglucosamine.It
consists of two types of monomers;
chitin-monomers and chitosanmonomers. Chitin is a
linear polysaccharide consisting of (1-4)-linked 2-
acetamido-2-deoxy-b-D-glucopyranose. Chitosan is
alinear polysaccharide consisting of (1-4)-linked 2-
amino-2-deoxy-b-D-glucopyranose (Tomihata and
Ikada, 1997; Roberts, 1992).
