Damper interaction with the structure dynamics
The effect of additional damping on structure vibrations can be investigated on two basic layouts, reported in the following figure: in both a spring and two masses realize an oscillating system, while friction is represented as a viscous damper. Layout (A) qualitatively explains the effect of guide ways damping on certain structural modes (see Fig 9). Layout (B) is analyzed analytically because it can be mapped onto the analyzed axis: M1 depicts the slide inertia near the guide ways, M2 the structure inertia near the work piece and C the guide ways viscous friction.
