Typical composition of poultry litter is shown in Table 2; it includes
proximate and ultimate analyses, ash fusion and ash analysis,
as earlier reported in some publications.
Table 2 illustrates that the composition of poultry litter can vary
significantly depending on the litter origin and management practices
of the farm. It shows that poultry litter ashes contain high
concentrations of potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and phosphorous
(P). The presence of K in ashes is known to be dependent on the
type of bedding material used. For example, potassium content is
very high, around 4–6%, when straw is employed; in contrast,
wood shavings reduce the level of K to around 1.5%
