This work attempts
to give an understanding of the
performance of non-profit sport organizations
by shedding light on the institutional
context and the problems associated with
acquiring external resources and legitimacy.
The study and measurement of the organizational
performance of Hellenic national
sport organizations (NSOs) is important,
because it constitutes a means of demonstrating
accountability for the public resources
spent by these organizations
(funded by government resources and by
national lottery incomes). It also enables an
indirect testing of the viability of current
managerial practices adopted by these
organizations. Non-profit organizations are
experiencing challenges for instituting changes
both in the internal and external environment,
in order to cope with the increased
professionalization and commercialization of
the sporting activity.
