Despite this small thumbnail size, with a database of about 100 hours of video, we still end up with almost 600 screens. And in the worst case, they all need to be visually inspected in search for a target. It is clear that this can only be done (if at all) when the interaction is optimized for speed and efficiency. After experimenting with different layouts, we therefore decided to go with a “linear”, one-dimensional design, where the storyboard extends to the top and bottom of the screen. Informal tests with, for example, a 2D layout (cf. Fig. 1, right) showed quickly that anything else would result in a cognitive overload, especially when search is done under time pressure.
